Sightseeing in Zürich

Zürich is a very beautiful city and a sightseeing tour around it is sure to be interesting and informative.

Churches

Grossmünster (Great Minster)

It is situated near Lake Zürich, in the Old Town. This is the place where the Swiss Protestant Reformation was initiated by Zwingli in 1519.

Fraumünster (Our Lady's Minster)

The Fraumünster Abbey of Zürich was founded in 853 by Louis the German. The abbey has played an important role in the history of the city. The magnificent building was fully renovated in 2004.

St. Peter

It is one of the main churches of old Zürich. St. Peter was originally built on the site of a temple to Jupiter, next to the Lindenhof, the former Roman castle. The church built in the 8th or 9th century was replaced by an early Romanesque church approximately in 1000 AD and later by a late Romanesque building in 1230. In 1460 the nave was rebuilt in Gothic style. St. Peter has the biggest clock face in Europe.

Predigerkirche.

Also one of the main churches of old Zürich, Predigerkirche looks imposing. The construction of the church was started in 1231. It is one of the symbols of the city.

Museums

The museums of Zürich are also worth visiting.

The Swiss National Museum (Landesmuseum, 1898)

houses valuable historical, artistic, and scientific collections.

Museum Bärengasse

tells its visitors about the history of the city in the 17th century.

Kunsthaus Zürich

houses one of the largest collections of classical modern art (works by Munch, Picasso, Braque, Giacometti, etc.

Museum Rietberg

focuses on the arts of Asia, Africa, America and Oceania. Museum Bellerive is a museum dedicated to fashion, architecture and design. It is situated in a beautiful place on the shore of Lake Zürich.

Migros Museum

focuses on modern and avant-garde international art. There are also other museums in Zürich: Kunsthalle Zürich, Museum of Design Zürich, Johann Jacobs Museum, Johanna Spyri Museum, Haus Konstruktiv, NONAM (North American Native Museum), Museum of the History of Medicine.

Other sights

Other sights of Zürich include the Old Town (Altstadt, the historical city centre), the guild houses standing along the river, Bahnhofstrasse (the main shopping avenue), Parade-Platz (the centre of financial activity, with the world-headquarters of several Swiss banks located here, in the middle of Bahnhofstrasse). Lindenhof is also a famous tourist attraction. It is the site of the Roman and medieval castle located near St. Peter. You can also visit the Zoological garden, the Botanical Garden of the University of Zürich and the Chinese Garden. There are many other sights in Zürich, so your tour around the city will surely be interesting.
